The Situation

In Nepal the education system faces social, cultural, political, economic and geographic challenges. Women, marginalised caste sectors and students from disadvantaged backgrounds face the greatest limitations in their education. 

These challenges are made difficult by the continuing shortage of formally trained Nepali teachers and the long history of corporal punishment and verbal humiliation used in Nepali schools. The school leaving exams (SEE) continue to have high failure rates across the country, and sadly there remains a bias against women and girls’ access to education. 


The Objectives


  1. To provide quality, child-centred, violence-free educational opportunities to as many Nepali children as possible, regardless of age, gender, religion or caste. 
  2. To increase the number of Nepali teachers with formal, nationally recognised teacher training qualifications.
