J1150N No Girls Left Behind Nepal

Nepal, Indian Subcontinent

The Situation:

Poverty rates in Madhesh Province are 50%, making it one of the regions with the highest poverty rates in Nepal. This project works in the Sarlahi district of Madhesh Province, where women and girls from socially marginalized groups face systemic exclusion from education, health & nutrition, and income generation opportunities.

Socio-cultural beliefs and parental attitude shaped by patriarchal notions are the major cause of inequality in girls’ access to education. Very high numbers of girls in Sarlahi district are not able to exercise their right to education, and instead are often subjected to child labour, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, dowry practice and unsafe migration.

Objectives:

To empower out-of-school girls through education accessibility in the Madhesh Province, Sarlahi district.

This project will contribute directly to out-of-school girls returning to education through its Accelerated Learning Program, which equips girls with the knowledge and skills needed to return to school. Parent meetings and education, as well as school support, are essential to the successful return of girls to school.
