J1126N Hope for Bardia

Nepal, Indian Subcontinent

The Situation

Hope for Bardia plays a significant role in developing the quality of education and health services the community of Thakudwara, Bardia in rural Western Nepal. The India-Nepal border is less than 70km from Bardia and is one of the busiest human trafficking gateways in the world. Respondents in a survey conducted by USAID identified lack of education as one of the main reasons why people become trafficked.

Education is fundamental to a community’s development and growth, breaking the poverty cycle, reducing inequality and building robust communities. Access to education is something most of us take for granted, but for many of these children growing up in a remote rural village in Western Nepal, this is far from their reality. Only a quarter of Nepalese children finish high school.

Families and communities, particularly in rural Nepal, reflect strict and consistent gender inequality, founded upon cultural and religious beliefs that create and reinforce a gendered social order.  Amidst gender disparity and other discriminatory social norms, Nepali women and girls face a complex set of challenges related to puberty and sexuality. Early marriage, early sexual activity, and early childbearing are common, culturally entrenched practices. Establishing a substructure of good health and well-being is a fundamental aspect to enhance the quality of life in the region.

Our projects are developed collaboratively with the community of Bardia to focus on specifically addressing these and the many other challenges Western Nepal communities face. We work collaboratively with the local community to ensure ownership, effectiveness and longevity in alignment with the SDG’s.

At the heart of what we do is respect for the people of Bardia and absolute belief they deserve and can achieve a confident, self-governed future of sustainable growth and development.

The Objectives

  1. To improve student attendance, performance and positive opportunities for students from Bardia through quality infrastructure, teaching and support.
  2. To provide access to quality healthcare and increase awareness on important health issues for the Bardia community especially in addressing the need of girls and women.
