J1000N Captivating Nepal - Stop Trafficking/Empower Women
Nepal, Indian Subcontinent
In partnership with 3 Angels Nepal and Captivating Australia
The Situation
It’s estimated that 20,000 children and young women will become victims of Human Trafficking this year in Nepal. Our partnership with Nepal-based 3 Angels Nepal, Aasaman Nepal and Captivating Australia Limited aims to address four key components of this problem.
The Objectives
- Stop girls from being trafficked by running monitoring and help desk operations in multiple trafficking hot-spot locations across Nepal. These stations work in partnership with police to stop and interview girls who's circumstances look suspicious. In excess of 5,000 girls/women a year will be intercepted due to concerns they are in the process of being trafficked. Additionally, we will perform full rescue brothel and house raids in partnership with police.
- We are targeting the eradication of the underlying reason people are at risk – poverty. We are rolling out Microfinance solutions across key trafficking hot-spot locations. This program will empower in excess of 1,000 at-risk women and their families over the next 3 years;
- Prevention through education – across 7 key trafficking hot-spots regions, we are implementing community mobilization and student education and awareness programs engaging women networks, community neighborhood watch groups, and girls high-schools. Each month, over 1,000 students/women will attend our programs. Additionally, we fund the running of a dedicated anti-Human Trafficking radio and media broadcast;
- We know that education is a big gap currently in remote villages across Nepal. Our partners will go into selected village locations with the aim of "leaving no girl behind". Without help, these girls are tomorrow's trafficking victims. Every girl currently out-of-school will be given the chance to get back to school. Her parents will be educated on the importance to her doing this; and
- We are addressing what is a clear gap in the Human Trafficking interception and rescue programs of many countries – genuine and sustainable after-care of trafficking victims. We have the current capacity to care for and rehabilitate up to 32 victims at any one time.
