J829N Another Life Community Development Project, Uganda
Uganda, Africa
The Situation
Another Life Community Development Project is located in Luwero District, 50km North of Kampala, Uganda in the Bukomba village. The region has endured the challenges of war, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and government corruption, with over 75% of the population living in poverty. The average household’s financial, nutritional, educational and health security has declined due to lost income, the ongoing challenge of food security, learning deficits from long school closures and the growing burden of diseases like Malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB. The Bukomba village is a low-lying, partly swampy, flat landscape without many buildings. The soil is fertile and good for crop husbandry, however, due to unpredictable seasons there are only two harvests per year. Many parents are not able to provide necessities for their children like proper clothing, food, shelter, education and medical care. Most people in the area are squatters, with bicycles and livestock (such as goats and chickens) being their primary assets.
The Objectives
The major objective of the project is to improve livelihoods by advancing education, health and food accessibility in Bukomba Village. Education and training are provided for the community in small business, modern farming methods (with a demonstration garden), adult literacy courses and vocational training.
