Shine Water Project Uganda

“This project has helped me to use my money wisely…before the project started, a lot of our family income was being spent on healthcare. When a child gets diarrhoea, it meant the money will be used to go to the clinic, but when the SHINE project came and we received tanks and information on proper hygiene and hand washing, I have not had any case in my family for the last three months and our income is going towards developing our family” – Hope Byasigaraho, beneficiary from Nyakagyezi

The J1110 SHINE Project is working in south-western Uganda to train and equip WASH champions with skills in WASH surveillance and promotion of good WASH practices. In partnership with the district water and health offices, the project has recruited and trained 16 WASH Champions and they have reached 1,400 households so far.

Girls’ needs have been addressed through an innovative project making reusable sanitary pads. By making the reusable sanitary pads themselves, girls have more knowledge and confidence in themselves and their bodies, and menstruation is demystified and less of an unknown force to be feared. 80 girls participated in the training and each have been tasked with reaching five more girls with this knowledge. Boys in the community requested to participate in the WASH project and 20 boys have been trained in making hand washing liquid soap. Each of these will reach out and train three more in their area.

2022 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

• 140 rainwater harvesting tanks distributed to households and schools

• 300 households using tippy tap devices for handwashing

• 5,600 people consistently accessing safe water in their homes and communities
