Her Future is Secure
A shop tucked away on a busy street is changing the life of a family and a community. Mama Prossy, one of the Watoto Neighbourhood mothers, is a success story thanks to the J210 Watoto Village Project. Learning basic business skills transformed her from someone in need to a provider and helper for others. Her beauty salon is thriving, and she has even expanded to selling produce outside her shop. Her business is making an impact and Prossy no longer worries about tomorrow.
Watoto’s Neighbourhood program focuses on empowering vulnerable women through trauma rehabilitation, counselling, literacy training, and business and vocational skills. Last year, 1,199 vulnerable women were reached through Watoto Neighbourhood. The initiative helps women become successful entrepreneurs, reducing the number of orphaned and vulnerable children. Additionally, 816 women learned to read and write, and 195 women started their own small business. All of this aims to break the poverty cycle, empowering individuals, and raising future leaders to create a brighter future for Uganda.
Through the J210 project, in addition to helping vulnerable women in our communities, family-based care is provided for orphaned and vulnerable babies and children. Watoto mothers care for up to eight children in each home across three villages which are equipped with schools, medical clinics, and vocational training centres. Watoto aims to nurture the next generation of Ugandan leaders by providing opportunities for academic excellence, integrity, and moral values to each child.
Within this project, Watoto Farms play a key role in sustainability efforts. This year, they provided 1.7 million fresh eggs and produce for children and mothers across the villages, helping them grow healthy and strong. The farms not only feed families, but also strengthen the community by providing jobs and hands-on training.
