J970N Teacher Training in Northern Uganda

Uganda, Africa

The Situation

Thousands of children complete their primary education in Uganda unable to read and write. This project will equip and inspire teachers to positively change the story of Ugandan schools. READ for Life – partner for project J970N – is planning to rewrite this story of education by working closely with primary school teachers and teacher-trainers to significantly improve literacy levels of students in lower primary classes.

The Objectives

  1. Improve the quality of literacy education in Uganda.
  2. Founded by educator Jody Unterrheiner, READ for Life has created its own reading program based on international teaching methods but designed specifically for the local learning environment. This project will support the implementation of this program through training local teachers, observing lessons and giving feedback and through supporting teachers. READ for Life staff operate as literacy leaders and mentors to improve teaching and learning methods.
  3. The project works with more than 100 primary schools and will see significant improvement in children’s reading and writing levels in lower primary classes.
