J1258N Sonshine Uganda

Uganda, Africa

The Situation

Sonshine School is located in a poor region of Uganda, heavily affected by the civil war, unlike the more developed Western part of the country. The Kiwoko area has experienced limited economic growth due to historically low educational levels. The school is adjacent to Kiwoko Hospital, which began as a clinic under a tree and has grown into a major regional hospital. The school was initially established to provide a safe learning environment for children of hospital workers and has since expanded to serve the broader community.

Sonshine School offers:

• A safe and healthy space for learning

• Nutritious meals for students

• Clean water and monitored sanitation facilities

• Solar power usage with plans for expansion

• Hygiene education and clean toilets

• Encouragement for both students and teachers to reach their full potential

It currently educates children aged 3 to 15, offering both academic and vocational training. The school is a beacon of hope in a region often overlooked, aiming to uplift the community through education. The project focuses on:

1. Infrastructure development to support school services and students.

2. Enhancing educational quality through improved supplies, teacher training, leadership, and operational support.

The Objectives

To reduce poverty and improve educational access in Kiwoko Village and the greater Luwero catchment area by:

• Delivering quality education to over 700 students by completing infrastructure for nursery and primary campuses within three years.

• Establishing an agriculture/food security initiative to help fund the school long-term.

• Sponsoring 200 students, teachers, and key programs over the next three years to support operational excellence.
