The Situation
Chitungwiza, a peri-urban area in Zimbabwe with an estimated population of 400,000, faces severe socio-economic challenges exacerbated by the broader national economic and political crisis. With an unemployment rate of 90% and widespread poverty, many residents struggle to access education and opportunities for self-sufficiency. The youth, who represent a significant portion of the population with an average age of 18, are particularly vulnerable, with the majority either unemployed or underemployed. Inadequate social infrastructure — limited access to healthcare, education, and social services — further disproportionately impacts youth. Additionally, a lack of financial services, such as capital for business ventures, deepens the cycle of poverty.
The Objectives
This project aims to address these multi-dimensional challenges by implementing targeted initiatives focused on sustainable development in Chitungwiza. Key components of the project include:
· Educational Support Program:
Providing support for tertiary education and vocational training for young people, enabling them to acquire skills that improve employability and self-sufficiency.
· Emergency Medical Fund (EMF):
Enhancing access to medical services through a drop-in centre that offers essential medical services and emergency care.
· Microfinancing Activities: Supporting entrepreneurship through:
- Business loans and grants to help beneficiaries start or expand enterprises.
- Business training to develop critical skills for managing and growing small businesses.
