J1221NW Wild is Life Community Engagement Project
Zimbabwe, Africa
In partnership with Mitchie Foundation
The Situation
Zimbabwe faces many challenges in the areas of wildlife conservation and general community well-being. Severe poaching and habitat loss due to many years of drought threaten the country’s biodiversity and ecological balance. Over 7.9 million Zimbabweans, 49% of the population, live in extreme poverty – i.e. on less than US$1.90 a day. Local communities rely heavily on natural resources which frequently leads to human-wildlife conflicts and unsustainable practices. Conversation efforts through community education around anti-poaching and sustainable livelihood practices are critical to developing a more resilient ecosystem and producing economic benefits for the current and future generations of Zimbabweans.
The Objectives
The Wild is Life/Zimbabwe Elephant Network Community Engagement Project aims to educate and engage local communities in the conservation of wildlife, increasing the participation of community and fostering economic opportunity over the next three years through:
• Educational workshops to enhance community support for wildlife conservation efforts and increase understanding of an individuals’ impact and contribution.
• Conservation sessions aimed at improving employment aspirations in conservation related activities amongst local communities.
• Practical support to encourage local business start-ups in conservation related activities.
