The Situation
The Ian Haynes Memorial Centre is a community development project based in the small village of Sevattur, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu.
Education is seen as a key tool for breaking the cycle of poverty for these beneficiaries. In India people are almost guaranteed a good job if they can speak English. Therefore, the project provides quality English education to the beneficiaries at the centre and has future plans to build an English-Medium school.
Sustainability is an increasing focus of the project, with development activities including the growing of crops (ground nuts and mangoes) for income generation and the rearing of chickens for food production.
The Objectives
- To improve the safety, wellbeing, education and future prospects for children in the Vellore District
- To provide emergency relief assistance to at risk families, elderly and widows in the surrounding community
