J1072N Education Equals Opportunity

Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia

Situation

Timor-Leste’s history of colonisation and occupation has severely hindered the development of educational opportunities and economic empowerment, particularly for women and girls. Following the 1999 referendum, widespread destruction left the nation with limited capacity in critical public services, including education and health. Despite progress over 20+ years, patriarchal norms persist, and rural areas lag significantly behind urban centers in terms of literacy, employment opportunities, and access to education and healthcare. Many families face prohibitive costs to support advanced education, especially as attending university often requires relocation and covering substantial living expenses. Additionally, rural areas, such as Hatobuilico, remain under-resourced, with inadequate infrastructure and high unemployment. Women's groups in Hatobuilico strive to combat poverty and build skills but face significant challenges in achieving economic independence and civic participation.

Objectives

This project aims to reduce barriers to education and promote economic empowerment. Key initiatives include:

  1. University Scholarships: Scholarships are provided for young women annually from impoverished families across Timor-Leste and students from Hatobuilico. These scholarships cover fees and living expenses and target disadvantaged students selected based on poverty and academic potential.
  2. Support for Women’s Groups: Informal women’s groups in Hatobuilico receive mentorship and development support to build skills, foster economic independence, and encourage civic engagement.

J1072N ensures young women and girls have access to educational opportunities to complete their studies and graduate, therefore improving their employability, economic independence, and ability to contribute to their families and communities.
