J989N Remexio Tertiary Student Support

Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia

Situation

Timor-Leste, a young Southeast Asian nation, gained independence in 2002 after centuries of colonisation and occupation. The country faces significant challenges in rebuilding infrastructure, governance, and social systems. High poverty rates, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to quality education disproportionately affect rural areas, such as Remexio in Aileu District. Geographic isolation, poor infrastructure, and limited transport options exacerbate barriers to education, with universities concentrated solely in the capital, Dili.

For many rural families, the costs associated with higher education, including tuition, accommodation, and transportation, are unaffordable. This creates a cycle of limited opportunities, leaving talented youth unable to access education or secure meaningful employment. With youth unemployment exceeding 20%, the lack of opportunities perpetuates poverty and hinders national development.

Objectives

This project seeks to increase access to higher education for rural youth by providing safe and affordable housing in Dili. The initiative aims to:

  1. Enable rural students to complete higher education by addressing financial and geographic barriers.
  2. Foster academic success through a supportive living environment.
  3. Empower youth as community leaders, contributing to the development of their families and regions.

By addressing educational inequality, Project J989N will break cycles of poverty and create lasting opportunities for rural communities in Timor-Leste.
