The Situation
Miraj is located in a rural area populated by small farms producing sugar cane, corn, rice, grapes and dairy products. The area is also characterised by power shortages, poverty, caste discrimination, and impoverished women and children. The city is home to over 500 commercial sex workers. Many of the women who work in the sex industry have numerous children who are introduced to the sex trade from an early age.
The Objectives
- Educate the impoverished sex workers of Miraj, India, in health, the importance of children completing their education, the rights of children, child protection, and vocational training.
- Up to 20 children will be provided with housing at night where they are not exposed to the sex trade, receive meals and medical care, and will be risk assessed. Children who are assessed and found to be in the high risk category for sexual exploitation will be offered a place in the Navajeen Transitional Children’s Home.
- School aged children assisted with their homework and taught computer skills and other vocational skills.
