J348N New Hope Project Borneo

Indonesia, Southeast Asia

The Situation

The Dayaks of West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo live in deep poverty. These people live in remote villages where infrastructure and educational opportunities are poor. The telltale signs of poverty in the region are underweight children, poor academic performance, health problems and often early death, lack of schooling, and early age of marriages with many children left neglected or orphaned.

J348N New Hope Project Borneo, Indonesia seeks out children from the most disadvantaged villages in Sanggau, Kalimantan, Indonesia and presents opportunities for them to receive a quality education. The projects’ boarding home, “Wisma Damai Sejahtera”, provides a safe and healthy, well-maintained living environment, including dormitories, a common kitchen and dining hall for children and staff, vegetable gardens and recreational facilities.

The Objective

The major objective of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction, to prepare potential leaders to participate in the social and economic development of their own communities through providing access to education for disadvantaged children and young adults of the Dayak people group of West Kalimantan.
