In partnership with LEOT School and Laos Educational Opportunities Trust
The Situation
The Lao Educational Opportunities Trust and its partner The LEOT Project have worked in northern Laos since 2012. The project meets two areas of need in the community.
- The provision of free education for disadvantaged students aged 16+.
- The building and repair of rural schools in Luang Prabang Province providing modern facilities for teaching rural children.
The Objectives
The LEOT School
- The main objective of the LEOT School is to provide free education to disadvantaged students irrespective of gender or ethnicity,
- The school teaches English Language and IT at beginner and elementary levels to improve students’ opportunity of employment at the completion of main stream education.
- LEOT also offers a number of additional courses.
- Dream Catcher – a career development course.
- Hospitality English - basic skills for working in restaurants or hotels. Tourism is the major occupation in Laos.
- Environmental Awareness – a partner in a recycling program.
- LEOT also offers weekend courses for students unable to study during the week
- In partnership with the Department of Education LEOT runs a Summer School for local Primary School teachers.
- All LEOT teachers are qualified Lao nationals, having completed university training.
- LEOT welcomes suitably qualified volunteers to provide training courses and to run workshops and deliver presentations.
Rural School Building
LEOT has always supported rural communities, undertaking projects supporting the supply of clean water and education. Our focus since 2017 has concentrated on the construction and repair of rural schools.
Our goal today is to continue to work on the quality of rural schools. Sadly, many are still inadequate due to age, poor maintenance and a lack of proper cleaning. LEOT has already built seventeen rural schools. We have plans today to build a further five together with the refurbishment of a further five schools.
We believe that education changes destiny and should be open to all children.
