The Situation
The contemporary visual art scene in Laos is moribund with no commercial market or support from the government or official development aid. The biennial contemporary art exhibition and contemporary art prize are designed to address this deficiency.
The Objectives
The project is currently working with public charities and UNESCO to provide youth in Vientiane with the space to collaborate and improve their entrepreneurial and creative skills under the Cultural and Creative Industries Hub Project. The main beneficiaries are established and emerging contemporary artists, students of contemporary art in Laos and the public through their novel exposure to contemporary art practices.
The following activities are being implemented:
- The second Elevations Laos Art Exhibition showcases contemporary artists in Laos and the surrounding region.
- Field trips and educational programs for students.
- Residencies for contemporary artists to visit Laos and engage in educational activities with students and the public.
The Elevations Laos project elevates the profiles and network for established and emerging Lao contemporary artists and encourages the participation of Lao artists and the public; and, contributes to the development of arts management through a sustainable funding model.
