J584 Water, Hygiene and Sanitation Program.

Africa, Tanzania

Project Description

MSABI, a Swahili acronym for “Safe Water for Better Health” (“Maji Safi kwa Afya Bora Ifakara”), is an organization created in 2008 in response to an epidemic of diarrheal diseases in the districts of Kilombero and Ulanga, Tanzania.

MSABI works in close collaboration with rural communities to improve their access to safe water and improved sanitation. Backed by local business, the locally employed MSABI team install new safe water points and environmentally safe compost pit latrines using low cost, simple, easy to use “smart” technologies, constructed from locally available materials. MSABI is able to install this infrastructure at 1/15th of the cost compared to other organisations working in the region.

MSABI also aims to educate and empower Tanzanian communities through community education, introduction of home based water treatment solutions and training courses on water and sanitation for advanced professionals. MSABI is also investing in monitoring, evaluation and engineering research in collaboration with local education institutions, which enables continuous improvements and endeavours to explore new areas such as the creation of water kiosks and the development of micro financing systems in the future.
