End Poverty: Profit with a purpose

As gratifying as it is to see profit come from labour and effort, satisfaction is multiplied when our success can have an impact on the well-being and future of others, not just at home, but around the world. Many companies are seizing the opportunity to impact the problem of global poverty.

Back in 1890 Edward Guinness, great-grandson of the founder of the Guinness Brewery, Dublin, Ireland decided to make a difference to the countless, homeless people in by establishing the Iveagh Trust, providing affordable housing  around Dublin and London. It is estimated that the investment he made in the housing he developed would today have cost in excess of AUD $300 million.

In 2005, Nike began their mission to help poverty-stricken adolescent girls in countries like Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Liberia. “Women make up approximately 70 percent of the world’s poor”[i] and “two-thirds of people unable to read and write are female”[ii]. Leslie Lane, managing director of Nike Foundation said the company aims to help “break the cycle of intergenerational poverty” in poor countries by focusing on “the future mother of every child born into poverty. Everything that happens to her in adolescence will have a profound effect on her and her family’s future,”[iii] he said.

Julius Nyerere, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania once said, “Education is not a way to escape poverty – It is a way of fighting it”[iv].We may not be able to end poverty but there are many things we can do to fight it and bring change to the futures and destinies of people around the world.
