Chennai, India: The response to COVID-19

GDG’s project, J925N Birds Nest India, supports women and families moving from the streets to the slums in the city of Chennai. The project provides vocational training for women, contributes to education fees and materials for their children, and purchases start-up home kits for more permanent accommodation (e.g. mats, cooking pots, fan).

But today, the need is more pressing. It is about surviving Covid-19.

The overwhelming challenge for 200 street families recently moving to the slum is that without a permanent address, they are unable to register with the Government for identity cards. This means they cannot receive Government ration cards. The ripple effect is a lack of access to Government help including basic food rations.  When you add the lockdown restrictions eliminating casual work, then the situation becomes dire.

GDG and its Australian Partner, Foxglove Project, is working on an emergency response providing dry foods and basic necessities for $20 per week per family. It’s an urgent need and we are asking our supporters to consider giving or share the opportunity to make a life changing difference in a woman’s world.
