Decades of complex and protracted conflicts, underemployment and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic pose considerable challenges in efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 on Zero Hunger and improved nutrition in Afghanistan.
Global Development Group has partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on emergency relief project J807NR, to help deliver much needed assistance to Afghanistan.
The situation in Afghanistan has escalated at a drastic speed, but WFP is committed to stay and deliver emergency assistance to an estimated 13.9 million people who will need it by the end of the year.
Despite security and logistics challenges, WFP maintains access to most of the country including areas experiencing active unrest.
In the first six months of this year, WFP delivered food and nutrition assistance to 5.5 million people, including people displaced by fighting.
In the past several weeks WFP has begun providing assistance to 1,000 households (7,000 people) in Kabul who have been displaced by the conflict. These households are being registered with mobile teams throughout the city.
