Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who is Global Development Group (GDG) and what does it do?

Global Development Group is an Australian, non-government, humanitarian development organisation working with approved partners to relieve poverty and provide long-term solutions through quality aid and development projects.

Over a billion people in poor countries around the world live in poverty and struggle every day simply to survive. Global Development Group’s work is to help improve the lives of those children, families and communities living in poverty, through the implementation of holistic, community-focused and ultimately sustainable development solutions. As well as providing relief in some emergency situations, we work on long-term community development projects that address the causes of poverty and help people move towards self-sufficiency.

Global Development Group does not discriminate on religious, political, social, cultural, age, ability (or disability) or gender grounds. We believe in freedom, justice, peace and an opportunity for everyone.

We depend on the support of the Australian public for funding through both regular and ‘one-off’ donations. Major donors include businesses, foundations and special interest groups.

Founded in 2002, Global Development Group is the eighth largest NGO in Australia in terms of private donations and the second largest Australian-founded NGO in the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID).

GDG is approved by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), a member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) and reports also to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC).

Our head office is in Brisbane, Australia. We also have offices in New Zealand, USA, and Cambodia.

Q. Would Global Development Group be interested in partnering with me and my project? What do I do and who do I talk to?

Email or call (07) 3341 6475. We will gladly answer your questions, talk with you about the process and forward a Proposed Project Application form to get the ball rolling.

Q. How does Global Development Group select projects?

In accordance with our mission, vision and core values, Global Development Group works with existing and potential partners and stakeholders to help identify and design potential aid and development projects. We have a small-scale, grass-roots approach to our projects. The process begins with the local ‘beneficiary community’; starting with how they perceive their needs. This empowers the community as they use their own resources, skills and material, building local capacity for understanding and managing the development objectives. Feasible projects are then approved, and together with our partners, Global Development Group funds, implements, monitors, reports on and evaluates these projects.

Q. How do I donate and how are donations processed?

If you already know which project you would like to donate to, press ’Make a secure donation now’ button on the home page and follow the simple instructions.

If you don’t have any preference and would just like to donate to wherever most needed, just type “where most needed” in the “I prefer my donation to go to” mandatory field on the ‘Secure donation page’.

If you have any difficulty, please call or email, using the contact details on the home page.

Donations are only accepted and processed in accordance with our donation policy and privacy policy (to view, please either click on ‘Terms and Conditions’ within the ‘Secure donation page’ or the ‘Help’ menu on the home page, under ‘Site user policy’).

In accordance with ATO guidelines, gifts over $2 to Global Development Group approved projects are receipted for tax-deductibility. Global Development Group provides proper authority through its ‘approved Item 1 DGR Overseas Aid Fund’. Project funds are disbursed to our approved projects overseas as per the approved project budget, usually through an on-field project manager. Tax-deductible gifts are only used for approved aid and development projects.

Q. How do I arrange a legacy gift, bequest or include a Global Development Group project in my will?

Australia has rigid regulations concerning who will receive the estate of anyone who dies without leaving a valid will; if none exists, intestacy rules automatically apply meaning your estate goes to defined close family members, or to the government.

Accordingly, if you wish to choose who receives something from your estate – family members included – it is essential to have a will. We recommend you seek expert independent legal advice regarding the wording of your will, however the basic options are as below:

Making a legacy gift in your will to GDG/a GDG project

There are basically four different ways to remember GDG &/or a particular preferred GDG project in your will:

(1) nominate a particular amount (a pecuniary legacy),
(2) nominate a percentage of your estate,
(3) nominate the remainder of your estate after specifying other legacies (a residuary estate), or
(4) nominating GDG &/or a preferred project as your sole beneficiary.

Please contact the Compliance Team at GDG ( for more information and suggested wording that will be required to accomplish your choice in your will. Or contact us via our ‘contact us’ page on the website.

Global Development Group is committed to continuous improvement and values your feedback, both positive and negative. You can give feedback, a compliment or a complaint, to Global Development Group via the website by using the ‘Feedback’ form on our ‘Complaints’ page, under ‘Feedback Type’. Select a drop-down option of either ‘Feedback’, ‘Complaint’ or ‘Complaint re the ACFID Code of Conduct’ (if you believe the complaint involves a breach of that Code, alternatively contact ACFID directly).
