On 11 October, a second devastating earthquake rocked western Afghanistan, compounding the suffering of those who were already struggling in the aftermath of the first earthquake that struck only days before.

These disasters have left entire villages in ruins. Thousands of lives have been lost. According to reports from our field staff, survivors are terrified, hungry and desperate. Many who stayed close to their villages have spent cold nights outside for fear of crumbling buildings.

Donate now to help children and families in Afghanistan.

Within 24 hours of the first earthquake, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) was on the ground working to help those affected, distributing 1.5 metric tons of fortified biscuits to more than 700 families whose homes were destroyed.

On behalf of these families and our team, I want to say thank you. I know this year has been difficult, and every time I write I am so grateful for the generosity and compassion that supporters like you show time and again.

If you donated to our emergency response in Afghanistan – to any of our emergency operations this year – I want to extend my deepest gratitude. It’s thanks to our supporters, thanks to you, that we are able to provide life-saving food to children and families in times like these.

There’s still time to support our emergency response in Afghanistan.

We aim to reach between 10,000 and 15,000 families (70,000 – 105,000 people) with essential food and assistance over the next two to three months. Winter in Afghanistan is only a month away, and the affected communities will need more than emergency assistance to rebuild their lives. With your help, WFP is dedicated to helping survivors over the longer term to restore their livelihoods.

Afghanistan was already facing a hunger crisis, with over 15 million people struggling to get the food they need. With our longstanding commitment to the people of Afghanistan, we will continue to provide life-saving food with the help of supporters like you.
