The Situation
Despite the apparent progress on a national level many of the poorest families in Mongolia have, however, been left behind. As is so often the case in rapidly developing countries there is a widening chasm between the rich and the poor. Due to the massive price inflation stimulated by the mining boom (inflation peaked at an incredible 31.9% in July 2008)[1] many families are now unable to afford basic living provisions such as adequate food and heating, and there is effectively no social welfare available to support them. Despite the prices of commodities increasing rapidly over the past sixteen years, the income of these families has increased at a comparably meager rate.
The Objectives
- Provide an emergency care shelter that provides a safe and supportive community for orphaned, abused and abandoned children
- Provide families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, or those who live under the constant threat of danger or abuse, with an emergency home (A Ger is a traditional Mongolian home) including a full set of furniture.
- The Foundation’s Health Care programme is available to all and provides primary healthcare and medicines for disadvantaged children and their families.
- The Education Scholarship programme offers full or partial financial support to older children in further education; this may be at university, college, or through vocational training.
