East Africa

Background

Kenya, located in Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa, is renowned for its vast landscapes, wildlife, and community spirit. Despite its beauty, the country faces significant challenges, with two-thirds of the population living in poverty and over 70% facing food insecurity, poor nutrition, and preventable diseases. Access to essential services such as clean water and sanitation remains limited, particularly in rural areas where 36% lack improved water sources. Additionally, youth unemployment and economic instability exacerbate the country's challenges. Similarly, Uganda, with one of the youngest populations globally, faces pressures on education, health, and protection systems. Agriculture employs three-quarters of Uganda’s population, and most of its citizens are under 30 years old. Both countries face high poverty rates and limited access to basic services, impacting overall development.

Objectives

The One Heart Community Development project aims to address the challenges in East Africa with several key objectives:

  1. Provide education scholarships for orphaned, vulnerable children (OVC) and expand educational facilities in Kenya, such as the junior secondary school in Turbo Village.
  2. Promote sustainability through business enterprises, including agricultural projects like bee farming, avocado, and passionfruit cultivation.
  3. Empower women through skills training and microfinance opportunities.
  4. Extend outreach in Uganda to improve healthcare, women's empowerment, and entrepreneurship training, fostering economic self-sufficiency in rural communities.

J1120N initiatives focus on empowering local communities through education, sustainable agriculture, business enterprises, and women's empowerment, fostering long-term economic self-sufficiency and improving living standards.
