Armenia, Europe
The Situation
Armenia faces significant challenges due to its turbulent history and ongoing struggles. Despite some economic growth, poverty remains high, with over half of the population living below the Upper Middle Income poverty line and child poverty affecting over a third of all children. The Ukraine crisis further worsened poverty, affecting vulnerable groups. Many families live in substandard housing, with limited access to healthcare and employment opportunities. Ongoing tensions with neighbouring Azerbaijan have led to violent conflicts, resulting in significant loss of life, particularly impacting women and children. Additionally, many ethnic Armenians have been displaced due to blockades and ethnic cleansing, leaving them without homes or livelihoods. These families, mainly agricultural workers, now struggle in increasingly expensive cities. Urgent needs include housing, employment in rural areas and support for Artsakh refugees, especially single mothers facing trauma and poverty.
The Objectives
The project will implement activities to address both the causes and symptoms of poverty in Armenia:
- Housing Solutions: Tailored, safe housing will improve living conditions and health outcomes for vulnerable families.
- Microbusiness Loans: Interest-free loans will help families start small businesses, such as livestock farming or greenhouses.
- Assistance to Refugees and Vulnerable Families: Provision of essentials like clothing, medical care and education support, with opportunities for employment through microbusiness loans.
These activities aim to reduce charity dependency, promote self-sufficiency and restore dignity to families.
