Middle East

The Situation

The region of the northern Middle East (including Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Cyprus) has been severely impacted by war and armed conflict over the past decade. Some of the implications from this political instability include mass migration of refugees and internally displaced persons, high unemployment and underemployment. Culturally, women across the Middle East have not enjoyed the same employment opportunities as men and, while they may be highly educated, they are underemployed. There is also a growing number of domestic foreign workers who are being forcibly enslaved in Jordan without legal recourse who are in need of protection, assistance and repatriation to their countries of origin.

The Objectives

To contribute to poverty reduction, education accessibility, leadership development and women’s empowerment in the nations of the northern Middle East (Jordan, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Cyprus).
