J1084N Healthy Futures Indonesia (Hohidiai)

Indonesia, Southeast Asia

The Situation

Hohidiai is a local language word which means “to restore”. For over twenty years this has and continues to be the focus of the project. This region of North Maluku was decimated by a horizontal conflict that saw the loss of businesses, houses, infrastructure and most tragically many lives. Due to this conflict, this region suffers from severe poverty and vulnerability. In the past few years, advances of technology and social media has reached the region but has caused a spike in online exploitation, online pornography and sex trafficking. Hohidiai's goal is to continue to provide a free clinic for the community and provide education around the risks of the online world. The clinic was recently awarded an accreditation as a comprehensive clinic with the health department officials remarking that the standard of cleanliness and care were above what they had seen before.

The Objective

The Major Objectives of the project are as follows:

  • To continue to run a free clinic for the poor, with a special focus on tuberculosis, HIV/Aids, Leprosy and burns patients.
  • To open a nursing school to train nurses who have a deep compassion and deep respect and love for their patients and coworkers, whilst obtaining high professional standards.
  • To educate young people about the dangers of online pornography, online exploitation and sex trafficking and to equip them with tools to withstand the onslaught of these pressures. The project also sponsors the rehabilitation of young people who have suffered from these dangers.
  • To sponsor children and tertiary level education with the aim of lifting people out of poverty through education.
