J1234N Piglets for Cambodians
Cambodia, Southeast Asia
The Situation.
In rural Cambodia opportunities for self-determination and for a families’ independent economic betterment are severely limited. Average monthly wages are below US$100 and time-consuming commutes for minimal wages are common. This puts enormous stress on families, communities and importantly the ability to provide a stable future for the next generation.
At Piglets for Cambodians, we believe that a single piglet holds the power to transform lives and subsequently communities. We are empowering families in local villages to break free from the shackles of generational poverty through our carefully planned and managed piglet gifting and housing program.
The Objectives.
A piglet and a fit for purpose pigsty are gifted to a selected family. The piglet is carefully chosen for breed and resilience and becomes a vital community resource:
1. Building a sustainable model. Each donated piglet will breed every 8 months. From each litter a sow is selected to be donated to another family and so the model is self-sustaining.
2. Enhanced income generation. Surplus piglets are sold at market improving a family’s financial position by as much as US$1,200 a year per piglet. The equivalent of one annual wage per donated piglet.
3. Empowering communities. Families gain dignity, confidence, and the ability to invest in their children's future and particularly in their education. The families have access to a valuable source of protein if needed and manure to enhance their existing agricultural activities.
4. Measurable long-term benefit. One piglet donated in 2025 will provide over US$70,000 in value over a 5-year breeding life.
