J986N Buk Bilong Pikinini Literacy Outreach

Papua New Guinea, Oceania

The Situation

Papua New Guinea has some of the lowest literacy rates in the Pacific – some provinces have literacy levels as low as 4% and up to 50% of school aged children are not enrolled at school in some areas.

The Objectives

Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) supports communities and schools across Papua New Guinea to improve literacy rates and foster a love of reading and learning.

  1. We establish children’s libraries, which offer an Early Childhood Literacy Program and an afterschool Literacy Support program. These libraries are installed at schools, hospitals, market places and community centres where children need our support and stimulation.
  2. BbP donates school library re-establishment kits (300-600 books and teachers resources) to schools across the country upon request.
  3. BbP offers training for teachers and community educators in our internally developed PNG focused Early Childhood Literacy program. This gives children the best start to their education, improves long term academic performance and prepares children for school,
  4. BbP publishes picture books and readers with PNG authors and illustrators to ensure that the children can relate to the books we have on our library shelves.
