J907N Ptea Teuk Dong Empower Children through Education

Cambodia, Southeast Asia

The Situation

Established in 1994, Ptea Teuk Dong (PTD) is a small not-for-profit, non-religious and politically neutral Cambodian NGO. It started as a street centre, and provided a safe environment for victims of poverty, sexual abuse and trafficking. Through rehabilitation and vocational training, PTD was able to restore the dignity of these women and reintegrate them back into the community.

Today, PTD continues to offer vocational training and non-formal education for disadvantaged children, plus the addition of a public primary school. PTD firmly believes that education is critical for the emotional, social and physical development of young children. Education builds self-esteem and hope for a future, encouraging children of our community to succeed.

PTD also has a second site 25 kilometers from Battambang Central Town where many former street families have been reintegrated. For this community in the Snoeung Commune, we established the Adventurous Education Centre that provides basic education including English lessons, nutrition and health education.

The Empower Children through Education program

When the children are left without care, we continue to accumulate large societies of poor people, especially children easily become the vulnerable group. By providing a safe place and good learning environment that support the children gain the crucial knowledge and skills to become a better members of society and use the knowledge and skills to make a positive development for their lives in the future.

PTD is addressing the needs of underprivileged children by providing a place where they can access to high quality of education with the aim to develop to be an educational center for entire community. There are plans to reach out children and community in 2 campuses from 5 different villages.

Children from the local community attend the school and are able to enjoy learning in a favorable environment with skilled teachers.

The Objectives

  • To provide ‘catch-up’ education in basic skills in an interesting and innovative program that children enjoy, resulting in regular attendance at PTD classes, higher achievement in exercises and tests, and reduction in dropout rate from the State school of the underprivileged children living in the surrounding communities.
  • To provide education in a range of skills and knowledge to enable the children living in the surrounding communities to complete Primary School, graduate from Secondary and High School and work towards tertiary education and/or employment that suits their abilities and interests.
  • To improve the overall health and disease prevention measures undertaken by people living in the surrounding communities by providing training in health, nutrition and hygiene.
  • To upgrade the current educational program into an independent K-6 primary school (formal education program).
