J904N Bali Children Education Scholarship Project

Indonesia, Southeast Asia

The Situation

Bali Children Foundation works in poor agrarian communities in remote Bali. These communities typically show dropout rates form primary school to junior high school in the range 30-75%. Some children don’t make it to school at all, some drop out as early as grade 5 in primary school. It was the initial intention to provide support with school fees, books and uniforms so that parents could keep their children in school.

Overtime, Bali Children Education Scholarship discovered that children are more likely to remain in primary and high school if BCF Scholarships are available and direct teaching is accessible. This allows the children to have a fighting chance to continue onto tertiary education. Communities in which we have been active for three years or more have zero primary school dropout rates and are showing close to 90% graduation (from senior high school) rates.

The Objective

The project’s main objective is to contribute towards higher levels of literacy and education in the remote communities of Indonesia through;

  • Working with local banjars to identify schools to work with
  • Developing an MOU with each school and regional education department
  • Recruiting and hiring teachers
  • Providing curriculum teaching modules
  • Delivering six curriculums to grade 2- 12
  • Delivering health training and screening
